Foam-backed vinyl siding for warmer rooms and straighter walls
๐ Call (412) 743-0352 NowInsulated vinyl siding is regular vinyl with a layer of rigid foam shaped and glued to the back of each panel. That foam fills the hollow space behind the vinyl, so the panels sit flat against the wall, resist dents and feel solid when you push on them. It also wraps the outside of the house in a continuous layer of insulation, which is something most older Pittsburgh homes have never had.
In a typical frame wall, the studs run from the inside drywall straight to the outside sheathing with no insulation in between, and every one of them carries heat outdoors. Many older homes in the city also have little or no insulation in the wall cavities at all. A foam layer on the outside covers those studs and slows that loss, which homeowners notice most in rooms that always felt cold in January.
Because the panels are thicker, window and door trim, J-channel and corner posts have to be sized to match, and window sills sometimes need extensions so water still drains properly. Behind the siding, a weather-resistive barrier and full flashing are installed, just as with any other siding. We also check outlets, hose bibs, dryer vents and light fixtures so they are remounted flush with the new wall.
Insulated vinyl costs more than standard vinyl, so it makes the most sense on homes where comfort and wall flatness matter. If your existing siding needs to come off first, see our siding replacement service.
