Tearing off tired siding and rebuilding the wall the right way underneath
๐ Call (412) 743-0352 NowMuch of Pittsburgh's housing is close to a century old, and many houses have been re-sided two or three times over the years, sometimes with each new layer nailed over the last. Replacing siding here often means peeling back that history: aluminum over Insulbrick over wood clapboard is not unusual. Doing it properly means getting down to a sound wall before anything new is installed.
We remove the old layers down to the sheathing or, on older homes, the original boards. Rotted sections are cut out and replaced, and window and door openings are checked for soft framing. A weather-resistive barrier goes on next, lapped so water runs out and down, then flashing at windows, doors and anywhere a roof meets a wall. Only then does the new siding go up.
Asphalt Insulbrick, asbestos-cement shingles and lead-painted wood are all found on Pittsburgh houses. We point out what we see during the estimate. Materials that may contain asbestos are tested, and if they do, removal is handled under the required procedures, which can affect the schedule and the price. It is better to know that up front than halfway through the job.
Vinyl, insulated vinyl, fiber cement and engineered wood are all options. We will walk you through how each one handles Pittsburgh winters, how it looks on your style of house and what it costs to maintain.
